We comply fully with the Data Protection Act 1998. Doctors and staff in the practice have access to your medical records to enable them to do their jobs. From time to time, information may be shared with other NHS organisations or others involved in your healthcare, in the interests of patient care. Anyone with access to your record is properly trained in confidentiality issues and is governed by both a legal and contractual duty to keep your details private.
All information about you is held securely and appropriate safeguards are in place to prevent accidental loss. In some circumstances we may be required by law to release your details to statutory or other official bodies, for example if a court order is presented, or in the case of public health issues. In other circumstances you may be required to give written consent before information is released – such as for medical reports for insurance, solicitors etc.
To ensure your privacy, we will not disclose information over the telephone or fax unless we are sure that we are talking to you. Information will not be disclosed to family, friends, or spouses unless we have prior written consent, and we do not leave messages with others.
You have a right to see your records if you wish. Please ask at reception if you would like further details or a copy of our patient information leaflet. An appointment may be required and a fee is payable for hard copies.
CCTV is installed internally in public areas and externally for security. Recordings are used entirely at the discretion of the partners including provision of images to the police or other official bodies, and will otherwise comply with the Practice’s Data Protection registration.
Please note that telephone calls may be recorded for the purposes of patient and staff care, security, and dispute resolution. Recordings and their use will be at the Partners’ discretion and will also comply with the Practice’s Data Protection registration.
The principles of confidentiality apply equally to all patients regardless of age. Young people (including those under 16) are entitled to equal confidentiality as all other patients. This includes respecting their wishes to withhold information from parents or guardians. The GP involved will determine the competency of a young person seeking treatment and will determine the extent to which confidentiality guidelines apply in each case.
Any young person regardless of age can independently seek medical advice or treatment, including surgical procedures, if a health professional believes that they are capable of understanding the choices of treatment and their consequences. This includes contraceptive advice, but the principles apply to other treatments, including abortion.
The policy of the Practice is to support young people in exercising their choice of medical treatment, and to deal with them in a sympathetic and confidential manner.
All patients aged 16 and over will be responsible for access to their own personal online accounts. Parents will not be provided with any information regarding children who are considered competent without their prior written consent.
All patients aged 16 and over are required to call in personally for their own results.
